German Driving Licence for Expats: Exchange, Convert or Start From Scratch

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I drive in Germany immediately after arriving with my non-EU licence?
Yes, for 6 months from your Anmeldung registration date. After that, your foreign licence is no longer valid for driving in Germany and you must have a German licence.
What happens if I drive after 6 months on an expired foreign licence?
You would be driving without a valid licence (Fahren ohne Fahrerlaubnis), which is a criminal offence in Germany. Do not let the deadline pass without starting the exchange process.
Does an International Driving Permit (IDP) extend my right to drive beyond 6 months?
No. An IDP is a translation document only — it does not extend the 6-month permission. After 6 months, neither your foreign licence nor the IDP is valid for residents registered in Germany.
My US licence is from a state without an exchange agreement. Do I have to retake everything?
No. You take the theory test (available in English) and the practical test. You do not need to complete the mandatory Fahrschule lesson hours that apply to first-time German licence applicants. Two to four refresher lessons with a German instructor is usually sufficient.
Can tourists drive in Germany on their foreign licence?
Yes. The 6-month restriction applies to people registered as residents in Germany. Tourists visiting Germany can drive on their foreign licence freely for the duration of their stay.
