Agentur für Arbeit: The Expat’s Guide to Germany’s Employment Agency

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I claim unemployment benefits if I quit my job voluntarily?

Usually not immediately. Voluntarily leaving a job typically triggers a 12-week benefit suspension (Sperrzeit). Exceptions exist for serious reasons such as workplace harassment or relocating for a partner's job.

Does claiming ALG I affect my German residence permit?

Claiming ALG I is a contributory benefit you paid into, so it does not automatically affect your residence permit. However if your permit is tied to specific employment, losing that job may have separate visa implications — consult the Ausländerbehörde about your specific permit type.

Can I receive ALG I while looking for work in another EU country?

Yes, for up to 3 months. You must register with that country's employment agency and notify the Agentur für Arbeit before leaving Germany. Failure to notify can result in loss of benefits.

How do I find my local Agentur für Arbeit office?

Use the office finder at arbeitsagentur.de — enter your postcode to find the nearest office and its opening hours. Most offices are open Monday to Friday, 8am to 12pm, with some afternoon slots.

What if I am self-employed or freelancing — can I still claim ALG I?

Self-employed and freelancers in Germany do not pay into the standard unemployment insurance and therefore cannot claim ALG I. There is a voluntary opt-in scheme (freiwillige Weiterversicherung) for the self-employed — worth considering if you are transitioning from employment to freelancing.
